Research from GetAgent.co.uk, the estate agent comparison site, reveals which street names appear to be the most popular in England and Wales so far this year.

GetAgent analysed price paid data from the Land Registry for property sales completed so far in 2021 and found a mostly religious theme.

Across England and Wales, the most popular street name is Church Road. So far in 2021, there have been 723 purchases located on a Church Road, with an average sold house price of £355,000.

This is followed by Church Street with 632 transactions across the nation selling for an average of £285,000. ‘Church Lane’ ranks third, with 524 transactions and an average sold price of £386,000.

With 265 transactions, Chapel Street also makes the list with homes selling for an average price of £140,000.

By analysing the data on a regional level, GetAgent has also revealed the most popular street names in each region of England and Wales.

Colby Short, Founder and CEO of GetAgent.co.uk, commented: “The housing market is booming across England and Wales and while demand is high across the board, it seems that church related road names are commanding the greatest level of buyer interest.

“Of course, the fragmented nature of the property market means that while these road names are the most popular, transaction levels and property values differ drastically from one region to the next.

“The driving factor behind this popularity is no doubt due to the strong history of the church within England and Wales rather than a particular desire to live on a church related street name in the modern age.

“While many churches may have now vanished, it’s likely that in a previous time they were the focal point of a town or village and so those road names to have held their reference today are likely to be central, close to amenities, and therefore popular amongst homebuyers.”

An analysis by property portal OpenBrix has revealed the nation’s most popular road names based on the highest number of homes sold in the last 12 months.

It looked at sold price records from the Land Registry to calculate which road names appeared most often.

The research shows that with nearly ten thousand transactions, addresses containing the word ‘Saint’ have proved the most popular amongst UK homebuyers. In second place is ‘High’, appearing in the addresses of 4,853 properties. In third place is ‘Church’, at 4,185.

OpenBrix also looked at the most expensive options on this list of popular road names. ‘Whistler’ came top, with the average sold price of just over £6m.

Barrons (£1.8m) is the next most expensive followed by Portugal (£1.474m), Paddington (£1.337m) and Fitzjohns (£1.287m).

Adam Pigott, CEO of OpenBrix, commented: “When it comes to the most popular road names there’s an almost biblical feel in terms of those to have seen the highest level of transactions in the last year.

Our property prayers have certainly been answered in recent months, with the market bouncing back at a phenomenal rate following the initial pandemic lockdown.

Market indicators on all fronts are showing some of the strongest price growth in quite some time and so any fears of a market collapse seem to have been well and truly put to bed.”

The latest research from GetAgent.co.uk, the estate agent comparison site, reveals the most popular road names based on property sales across England and Wales.

Looking at the road names with the highest number of transactions in 2020, GetAgent found that the most popular road names were High Street, Station Road, and Main Street. This was determined by looking at the number of property sales so far this year.

Also, high up in the rankings were Church Road, London Road, Church Street, Park Road, Church Lane, Victoria Road, and Main Road.

Colby Short, Founder and CEO of GetAgent.co.uk, commented: “When it comes to the most popular road names and types, this is almost certainly influenced by a higher number of ‘High Streets’ and ‘Roads’ being available across the UK property market, and they top the table by quite some margin.

“However, it’s interesting to see that when it comes to the price paid by homebuyers, names that carry an air of exclusivity or prestige such as ‘The Street’, ‘Hill’ or ‘Garden’, command a far higher price than ‘Terrace’, for example.

“This is ultimately down to the area itself, however, some buyers will still consider a road name as a reason to either offer above the odds or to keep on searching.

“In today’s market, living along one of these road names could be just the ticket if you’re looking to secure a better price when compared to a similar property a few streets down.”

Fake paint, bin-bags and witches hats selling quicker than ghoul-shaped cakes. Yes, Halloween is fast approaching.

To mark the annual ‘scarefest,’ Zoopla has uncovered the spookiest street names in Britain and has looked at whether their frightening connotations have affected the values of the homes located there.

Spooky streets

Those with a phobia of creepy crawlies would shiver at the thought of living on Spiders Lane in Exmouth. Goblins Green in Welwyn Garden City and Bat Alley in Sturminster Newton would also be frightening for some homeowners…never mind the postman!

However, the scary street names have done precious little to warn off buyers, with property prices on the top-ten spookiest locations still typically high.

The list, compiled by Zoopla, was;

Rank                Street                                                                   Current Average Value

1          Spook Hill, Dorking RH5                                                        £651,298

2          Cackle Street, Brede, Rye TN31                                             £359,264

3          Cauldron Crescent, Swanage BH19                                      £326,283

4          Bat Alley, Marnhull, Sturminster Newton DT10               £311,979

5          Goblins Green, Welwyn Garden City AL7                           £303,218

On average, the spookiest property names were found to be just under £200,000. The average value in Spook Hill is £651,298, with Cackle Street also having a high typical value of £359,264.

Brave souls

Findings from the report are supported by another survey that shows the majority of people would not be deterred from purchasing a supposedly haunted house. 6% went as far as saying they would be more inclined to view a home if it were said to have, ‘supernatural occurences.’

This research, conducted by Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks, indicated that two-thirds would not be put off buying a haunted property.

Steve Fletcher, director of retail banking, said that, ‘everyone is looking for something different in their dream home. However, we were surprised that the majority of people would be happy to share with a supernatural presence.’[1]

Our research also revealed that 3 per cent of those surveyed actually believe their current property may be haunted and that they are co-habiting with a ghostly resident,’ he added.[1]
